Getting Around Rajasthan: A Practical Guide to Taxis, Tempo Travellers and Tour Routes
Anyone who has tried to see Rajasthan in a week learns the same lesson quickly: the distances are long, and the best places rarely sit near a railway station. Jodhpur to Jaisalmer is about 285 km, and Jodhpur to Udaipur is roughly 250 km. A fort at sunrise or a desert camp after dark does not fit around a train timetable. So the vehicle you choose shapes the whole trip, and it is worth thinking about before you book hotels.
Here is how I would approach it, starting with the group and then going city by city.
Start With the Group, Not the Car
A simple rule works for most trips. Up to four people can manage in a regular taxi. Five to eight people are better off in a larger car. Nine to seventeen should look at a tempo traveller, and anything above that is bus territory. Count the suitcases too. Four adults with big bags can fill a sedan faster than you would expect.
Taxis in the Four Main Cities
Jodhpur. The old city is the real challenge here. The lanes around the Clock Tower are tight, and parking near Mehrangarh is limited. Most visitors are better off hiring a taxi service in Jodhpur for the day than driving themselves between Mehrangarh, Jaswant Thada and Umaid Bhawan Palace. If you travel between October and March, sort out your Jodhpur taxi booking a few days ahead, because the good drivers get taken first.
Jaipur. The sights are scattered. Amber Fort sits north of the city, City Palace and Hawa Mahal are in the old quarter, and Jal Mahal is on the road in between. Covering them in a day is realistic with a taxi service in Jaipur. A cab service in Jaipur is also what many wedding guests and business travellers end up using when the schedule is tight.
Udaipur. This is a city that rewards slow travel. With a taxi service in Udaipur you can see City Palace in the morning, rest in the afternoon, and be at Lake Pichola well before sunset.
